Henderson-Johnson’s Long Tradition of Smart Giving
The Henderson-Johnson Company has been in Central New York since 1927, just like the Community Foundation! Family means a lot to the Martins, and so does giving back. Established at the Community Foundation in 1969, the Henderson-Johnson Community Fund has been supporting area not-for-profit needs for nearly 40 years.

The original owners, Bill Henderson and Gus Johnson, began their business in Youngstown, Ohio before World War I. After the war, when construction slowed down in Ohio, Bill followed the work east to Albany, NY, finally settling in Syracuse. When Henderson-Johnson incorporated here in 1927, Bill kept the original name it’s been that way for 80 years - and the company is still family-owned and operated.

Lloyd Martin, Sr. (who married Bill Henderson’s daughter, Molly) and Lloyd Martin, Jr. represent the second and third generation of family to be involved at the company - and there’s a fourth generation on board, too. The family has found that their fund is easy to use and that the personal service they receive from the Community Foundation has helped them accomplish their charitable goals.

They’ve enjoyed the relationship so much that when Lloyd, Sr. retired, he and his wife, Molly, established a donor-advised fund of their own. As a fighter pilot and prisoner-of-war in World War II, Lloyd remembers how important the American Red Cross was in saving soldiers’ lives. That experience continues to motivate his charitable giving.

The Community Foundation salutes Henderson-Johnson on its 80th anniversary and looks forward to many more years of working together to enrich our community.
