The CanTeen

The CanTeena teen center and afterschool program serving about 500 youth a year, has seen  a history as full of transition as its teens. With the help of a $34,000 grant from the Central New York Community Foundation, CanTeen youth are now enjoying a permanent home in Cicero that provides a safe, supervised place for them to go after school.

After 15 years of programming and moving to and from leased facilities, Friends of the CanTeen and the programs’ volunteers took steps to purchase a permanent "home" on the perimeter of the Cicero North Syracuse High School. Fundraisers helped them purchase a building located at 6046 State Route 31.

“We learned that great passion is contagious and it alone has the power to drive any project through to completion,” said Susan Jordan, a project leader.

Next, they sought help for building and renovation of their new site. Funding from the Community Foundation made it possible for ramps, paving, cabinets, counters and gutters to be installed. Volunteers and project leaders were also able to rally in-kind donations to offset costly material and labor.

“The adults here cared, gave their time, determination, and mostly [gave up] time with their own families for youth in the community that needed it,” said Jessica Ryan, a past teen participant. “I had a place that I could call home away from home,” she said.

After a documented 789 hours of volunteer service and labor, the CanTeen opened its new facility in April of 2012. Since then, it has benefited from increased youth attendance and reduced operational costs. www.cnycf.org
