Improving Literacy in Central New York

Central New York is the birthplace of the modern adult literacy movement. Yet in Central New York where many literacy services were pioneered, the problem of illiteracy continues for thousands of citizens. The inability to read, write and do basic calculations continues to erode people's hopes for a brighter future. Without functional literacy skills, our neighbors, families and whole community remain vulnerable and at a disadvantage in today's global economy.

The Community Foundation continues its commitment to address the issue of literacy across the lifespan through its grantmaking and community leadership. Our work led to the founding of the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County (LCOC), of which we are a managing partner, and helped direct support for Madison County literacy programs. Through grants and partnerships, we endeavor to strengthen literacy service providers and their programs.

There are no current requests for proposals under the literacy initiative, but your literacy program may qualify for funding through our Community Grants program. Additionally, the Coalitions are seeking partners as they  strive to reach the goal of 100% Literacy through 100% Community Engagement.

Questions about our literacy initiatives should be directed to Robyn Smith at (315) 422-9538 or RSmith@cnycf.org.

Imagination Library

Imagination Library strives to build skills in young children for kindergarten readiness by delivering a new, age-appropriate book directly to each child's home once a month from birth to age five. The program is designed to establish a culture of literacy among its participants by increasing the frequency that parents read to their children and generating excitement about reading at home.
