Have you ever wished that your organization had a long-term reserve fund or that your existing reserve fund was larger? Is the current uncertainty in the nonprofit funding landscape causing you to consider other options for steady income to your organization? Would you like a way to help your donors leave a legacy of connection to and support for your organization? The concepts and skills reviewed in this session will help with all of these questions and will be useful regardless of your nonprofit organization’s size or experience level. In addition, you will learn best practices from the Community Foundation and other organizations in attendance to increase your chances of successfully developing planned gifts. Finally, you will leave the session with some useful takeaway documents to help you get started on implementing or refining your organization’s approach.
You will learn:
- Concepts and approaches for planned giving and endowment development
- How to tailor the approach to your organization
- Skills for meeting with donors, including a role playing exercise to practice asking for planned gifts
- What resources are available and how the Community Foundation can help
Hybrid Event:
This is a FREE hybrid event, offering both in-person and virtual options to attend.
- Virtual Attendee – Zoom login information will be sent via email 24-48 hours prior to the event date for all virtual ticket holders.
- In-Person Attendee – For those choosing to attend in person, the event will take place in the second-floor community ballroom inside the CNY Philanthropy Center (431 E. Fayette Street, Syracuse NY, 13202). Doors open at 12:30 PM.
PRESENTERS:
Tom Griffith is Vice President of Development and responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive development program to accomplish the goals set forth in the Community Foundation’s strategic plan. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, with highest honors, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as the Chartered Financial Consultant®, Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy®, and Accredited Estate Planner® designations. Tom currently serves as a board member on the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils, the Estate Planning Council of Central New York and WCNY, and is a member of the Financial Planning Association and the Upstate New York Planned Giving Council. Tom lives in East Syracuse with his wife Kelly Griffith and children David (23) and Jessica (21).
Rebecca Cohen is a Member at Bousquet Holstein PLLC, where she focuses her practice on immigration matters and tax-exempt entities. Rebecca works extensively with families and foreign nationals to help navigate the immigration process. Certified by Mediation Works Inc. and the New York Peace Institute, Rebecca’s mediation experience brings a collaborative, solution-focused approach to her legal practice, and an ability to listen well and understand her clients’ interests and needs. Rebecca’s prior experience serving in leadership roles with various non-profit organizations in the Boston area provides unique insight and understanding of the challenges faced by these organizations. Rebecca earned her Juris Doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University. She currently serves as Vice President of the Fayetteville-Manlius Board of Education.
