Nearly $1.5 Million Distributed to CNY Nonprofits

The Central New York Community Foundation recently distributed $1,381,547 in grants from its Community Fund and a variety of Field-of-Interest funds to local nonprofits; the William & Mary L. Thorpe Charitable Fund, a donor-advised fund administered by the Community Foundation, contributed $100,000 toward the funding. The following organizations received grants in June:

ARTS, CULTURE & HUMANITIES

Everson Museum of Art – $35,000 

Host programs, events, artist talks and classes to foster dialogue around a new exhibit about the decline of print journalism

Onondaga Historical Association – $50,000

Install environmental controls throughout its building

Otisco Lake Community Association – $1,470

Hold three summer concerts featuring local artists to promote social, educational, cultural, and recreational activities for community members

Redhouse Arts Center – $43,200

Purchase an LED marquee to enhance visibility of events throughout the year

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park – $24,200

Renovate the Artist Lodge’s garage and the Dorothy Riester House and Studio to be used for exhibitions, programs and events

EDUCATION

Erie Canal Museum – $20,000

Hire an Education & Visitor Service Coordinator

Jowonio School – $37,170

Purchase two vans that can accommodate car seats and mobility devices

Onondaga Community College Foundation – $30,000

Expand the English for Medical Professions preparation course for individuals seeking employment in the healthcare industry

The Reading League – $27,700

Grow the Professional Development School-Based Partnership Program, which works to improve literacy education for teachers

 

ENVIRONMENT & ANIMALS

Cortland County Soil and Water Conservation District – $80,000

Purchase an aquatic vegetation harvester to assist with the removal of invasive species in local lakes

Finger Lakes Land Trust – $150,000

Purchase 98 acres of land to help conserve the quality of the drinking water in the city of Syracuse

National Audubon Society – $24,000

Expand the Next Generation of Conservationists Program for Onondaga and Cayuga County students

Ruffed Grouse Society – $88,375

Improve habitat health in a forest block across southern Onondaga and northern Cortland counties

Town of Granby – $75,000

Create the town’s first public park to increase recreational activities for community members

Town of Richland – $50,000

Build a new park at Fireman’s Pond and expand the Hamlet Park

 

HEALTHCARE

13Thirty Cancer Connect – $5,910

Launch a four-session program addressing the sexual health of young adults with cancer

Justice Innovation – $50,000

Support Westside Community First, an overdose prevention and harm reduction program

SAGE Upstate – $16,000

Host a trauma-informed breath work workshop program for LGBTQIA+ adults

The Upstate Foundation – $76,800

Hire a pediatric mental health nurse practitioner

Village Birth International – $58,400

Expand its perinatal health and doula programs for refugee and New American families on the Northside of Syracuse

 

HUMAN SERVICES

Deaf New Americans Advocacy – $50,000

Purchase farming supplies to help empower and engage farmers who are deaf through agricultural farming

Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways – $40,000         

Support the Beyond Program, which provides social and emotional support opportunities for LGBTQIA+ youth and their caregivers and families

Habitat for Humanity – $15,000

Replace the roof of its building on West Genesee Street

Joseph’s House for Women – $60,000

Replace the roof of its building on Court Street to allow for an expansion of rooms

Jubilee Homes of Syracuse $38,261

Purchase farm supplies and provide stipends for youth participating in the Urban Delights Community Learning Farm

North Area Meals on Wheels – $66,100

Expand its facility to add space for meal preparation and distribution

PEACE, Inc. – $55,000

Support the Early Childhood Career Pathways Program, a childcare workforce partnership with Child Care Solutions of CNY

Salvation Army of Syracuse – $15,000

Repair the elevator in its family shelter

Smokey Hollow Community – $24,000

Hire a strategic development consultant to help with fundraising

Syracuse Northeast Community Center – $44,100

Grow the Food Foundations Program, which promotes individual, family and community health

Women’s Opportunity Center – $30,861

Hire a Personal Assistance Navigator to help women who experience verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse
