For many mothers and caregivers raising children with autism, limited access to inclusive, supportive spaces can make it difficult to find connection, resources and a sense of community. To help address that need, we provided Women Overcoming Obstacles Together (WOOT) with $10,667 grant from our Venture Fund through our Participatory Grantmaking process to support Nothing About Us Without Us 2.0. This initiative brings families together through a series of events — including a disability community fair, creativity workshops and educational sessions — designed to reduce stigma, foster connection and provide access to resources for families navigating autism. By centering the experiences of those often underrepresented, WOOT is creating space for healing, learning and collective growth.

I attended an event hosted by WOOT called the Charm Bar, where participants made jewelry such as bracelets, necklaces and purse charms. This was the first WOOT event that I experienced.
The individuals in attendance appeared to really enjoy themselves. What I witnessed was the bonding of youth with their parents, as well as the socializing, engagement and fellowship the event clearly promoted.
I thought it was a well-planned activity that brought community members and their families together to enjoy one another, along with food and entertainment. The hosts did a great job organizing the event.
I have known Chayna Short, the founder of WOOT, since she was a youth participant in the Southwest Community Center. It was a great experience, and I am looking forward to attending the next event in April.
“WOOT was excited to partner with The Craft Club to host the Charm Bar Experience,” said Short. “Together, we created a welcoming space for connection, creativity and community, bringing women together who support the autism community. We were able to design, express and celebrate in a positive way.”
