David Roland Bacon was born and raised in Syracuse and graduated from Nottingham High School. A 1952 graduate of Cornell University School of Mechanical Engineering and member of Phi Kappa Psi, David then served two years in the US Army Ordnance Corp, at Aberdeen, MD.
David started his business career with Allis-Chalmers as a sales engineer in Allentown, PA. In 1961, he returned to Syracuse to join his father-in-law’s business, Kenneth A. Taylor, Inc. Then he received a New York State Professional Engineer license and started his own mechanical contracting firms, Bacon Industries and Burnet Installations. Later David entered the affordable housing field in Upstate New York founding Two Plus Four Companies which develops, builds and manages rental housing apartments and homes. Family, friends, and business associates of David remember his smile, firm handshake, integrity, unconditional love, humility, quiet generosity, gentle kindness, humor and P.O.W.s (Pearls of Wisdom).
David’s wife, Ellen, was born in Norristown, PA, and lived in several places before her family settled in Syracuse. She graduated from Eastwood High School and received her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College in 1954. Ellen and David married on February 19, 1955 at University United Methodist Church in Syracuse. Serving other people was her life’s purpose. She unselfishly donated her time to family, community, and church activities. She supported her children’s activities through her involvement in the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTAs at Edward Smith Elementary, Levy Junior High School and Nottingham High School and the Booster Club at Nottingham High School. For more than 70 years, Ellen was an active member of University United Methodist Church and also participated on the Boards of Junior League, Planned Parenthood, YWCA, PEO (Chapter M) and Portfolio Club. The couple created this fund to continue their charitable wishes by supporting the ever-changing needs of the community for generations.
