Robert W. Bitz Community Fund

Born on September 16, 1930, in Syracuse, NY, Robert (Bob) grew up on a 71-acre farm near Plainville, NY, a property that had been in his family since 1835. Bob’s early education took place in a small two-room schoolhouse, followed by high school at Baldwinsville Academy and higher education at Cornell University, where he was a member of Alpha Zeta Fraternity. After graduating, Bob returned to the family farm, continuing its legacy alongside his father. His marriage to Janice Abbott, whom he met in high school, brought three children into their lives, and they resided on the farm until 2013. Bob had a deep appreciation for farming, both the traditional methods he grew up with and the rapid advancements he witnessed throughout his life. His leadership transformed the family’s turkey business into the largest in New York State, pioneering new turkey products and establishing popular Plainville Farms restaurants in the region.

Beyond his agricultural achievements, Bob was a dedicated philanthropist and community leader, deeply committed to various local organizations and causes. His extensive volunteer work included significant roles in the Plainville Christian Church and the Plainville Rural Cemetery Association, where he served as a trustee for over 50 years. Bob’s impact extended to education through his decade-long service on the Baldwinsville Central Schools Board of Education and as a trustee of the Baldwinsville Library. His contributions to local governance were notable through his involvement in the Town of Lysander Planning and Town Boards. Additionally, Bob’s leadership was influential in financial and agricultural sectors, with directorships at the Seneca Saving and Loan Association, Farm Credit Bank of Northern NY, and Farm Credit Bank of Springfield. A passionate advocate for agricultural education and leadership, Bob held presidencies in organizations such as the Cornell Agriculture Alumni Association and LEAD New York. His efforts were recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Service to NY Agriculture Award from the NY State Agricultural Society, exemplifying his lifelong dedication to both his community and the broader agricultural field.

Bob created this fund to provide perpetual support to address the greatest needs of the Central New York community.
