Participatory budgeting is a type of community engagement in which residents decide how to allocate funding through a process of democratic deliberation and decision-making.

Centennial Participatory Budgeting – The Central New York Community Foundation is turning 100 and celebrating a century of impact. CNYCF will be launching a participatory budgeting project in our five county footprint of Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Oswego Counties where residents will determine how to spend $75,000 and $200,000 in Onondaga County through a participatory budgeting process. Working in partnership with residents, nonprofit and grassroots organizations within each respective County, residents will set a priority funding area, co-design projects and request for proposal criteria and vote on the projects they feel are best to address a community need. Make a difference in your community and SIGN UP!

If you have questions, you may direct them to Qiana Williams, program officer, at 315.883.5568 or qwilliams@cnycf.org.

A typical participatory budgeting process follows these steps, usually over the course of a year:

  1. Process Design: We are partnering with a consultant and community leaders to create the rules and engagement plan.
  2. Brainstorm Ideas: Through meetings and online tools, residents will share and discuss ideas for projects.
  3. Develop Proposals: Groups of volunteers will develop the ideas into feasible proposals.
  4. Vote: Volunteers vote on the proposals that most serve the community’s needs.
  5. Fund Winning Project: The Community Foundation will fund the winning idea(s) with a pool of $150,000 in grant dollars.
